Nicely done, captured the aerial perspective quite well.

It's a good piece, but not a great one IMO

I really like the sense of depth and the design of the buildings

However, the overall look is too muted and stilted
I really miss 'life' in this: many tiny lights, ships hovering etc..
It lacks also a well dinifed lightsource.

I followed your WIP, and it's a good progression, but I think you are
able to push the envelope some more;)

Wow! Kickass!
I like it very much. (thumbup)
The architecture and the beam give it a cool personal touch, so I won't see it as "just another cityscape".
Looks like a great concept art to me.
Next step should be more patience with the detail work imo.

I dont really like the noise effect you added across the image, doesnt really work for me. Like the colors, and the sense of depth, some of the elements you had in previous versions in your wip I wish were in here, like the floating balloon things, but this works.

I just finished HL2: EP1 and for some reason, this reminds me exactly of that.

Excellent colors, use of light and shadow hints of grandure and reveals hidden sadness.
The grit and grime feels like smog and dust - I want to see more of this city.

Very nice, Pawel! Tops!

Love this work Pawlack =D great atmosphere and design of the buildings =)
great idea with the " explosionmarks" on the building, but i really miss som life here, all the buildings at the bottom are the same colour and everything looks dead, just maybe add some ships or some small lights/ smoke suggesting rescent activity...maybe a human being to know the real size of the thing =P
otherwise great work m8!!! =D

hard work pays off. What theme are you gonna study next? A portrait? or a vehicle perhaps?

Avatar Crow

 08/18/06 @644

to all the idiots who request more details, can't you see how well these "boxes" are rendered? People always want details details details and a little more details, in expense of their foundation rendering. This is much more authentic and real than most of the "detailed" cityscapes.

Avatar Wallace

"to all the idiots who request more details"

You have to be careful using strong words like that and insulting members here.
I think the main purpose of the comments section is to help others improve their works and skills... Constructive. Relentless appraisal will not help anyone.
Yes, the 'boxes'are well rendered with good and interesting shapes.
It's a solid piece but the overall impression is, that it could use some more work.
And I'm not talking about insane detailing, but putting in more elements here and there (lights, some small ships etc).
It would definately improve this image IMO, and looking at the comments I'm not the only one...

Again, I'm trying to be constructive and helpful here, it's well intended;)

Avatar Azurelle

 08/18/06 @714

Uhm, I don't think that an artwork has to die of details.
It is more of an concept/ idea/ great composiion that makes a good work.
Also a good feeling for light and dark areas (contrasts) and for colors/ coloring itself is making a great piece.

So what I am thinking about this one is, that it truely shows a good architechtural feeling for buildings in future times eventhough the concept could be a bit more clearly at some points.
The color palette is a bit dusty - I don't know if that was on purpose but it could use some more contrasts speaking of some more highlights to focus on and a bit mroe work on the dark areas.

Additional to that this work reminds me very much of the entrys that were added by Raine Kuusi to CGTalk's Master and Servant contest. He also uses to paint such buildings and maybe it could be helful for you to take a closer look at them - if you haven't already done so.

Avatar pawlack

 08/18/06 @756

Thanks for this great feedback.
Raine Kuusi - this is Crow Crow = Raine Kuusi from CGTalk ;)
I saw those buildings during the contest and i really like them. Somehow this type of architecture influenced my work.

Wallace - I understood your first comment as lack of life in my piece, and I agree with that 100%. There is nothing going on there no vehicles no ships plane people or any creatures.

I have to thank you all for great feedback given here. ;)

cityscrapers in master and service contest? Wrong contest

I did start with scifi city in spectacular -challenge but it was changed quickly to some veeerry strange stuff.

Yea I'm Ranath from CGtalk.com

Wallace: I don't think this one aimed for 2,010,600,044 details. It's an image showing good rendering of basic shapes, and it doesn't need any more details (that are sooooooooooooo hugely overrated anyways). I think it's refreshing to see this kind of work instead of this "I must compete with camera in creating an army of details".

Avatar Azurelle

 08/18/06 @813

LOL well then Pawlak did already look at your work!
Hahahaha
Uh doh I didn't really know it was you, crow.
I loved your entry!
Uhm. not Master & Servant - Spectacular contest then?
They're having so many contest and entrys that it can be really confusing sometimes.. XD

Avatar Crow

my newest contest entry is Atlantis matte painting, you're not keeping yourself updated! ;D so what's your cgtalk nick? Didn't know you hang around there too :)

Avatar Azurelle

 08/18/06 @893

I wasn't talking about your latest entry I was talking about the entry were you skecthed buildings witch are looking very much like the buildings her ein design. And I believe it was for master & servant or spectaculous..

My nickname there is the same I have here but I do not browse there that much.

Avatar Kaduflyer

I found the interchange of ideas and support between yourself and Crow in the WIP of this very inspirational, a perfect example of how this community CAN work when it stops bickering.
The results here are very impressive...doom laden and gloomy but with that one beacon shining in the darkness...nice!

As a sculptor I don't do 'scapes' (city, land or sea)...but I might give one a bash now.

This has been one of the most educational posts I have witnessed in a long time I am actually curious to see if I could try to paint a city scape... you did such a good job, I agree with the little details the ships people, but other than that if it stands alone like this, it still speaks volumes..... +10

Very good work, lovely lighting! I don't think that the fact that there is no "life" is a problem, I love it as it is now. Nobody will work or go outside in the future :p People will always been in front of their computer/TV/cyborgs (ok, I stop writing stupid comments).
Thanks for having told me that you had posted it Pawel, great work! I just wish there were some more variations in the clouds.

Hi Pawl! Thx for the PM :)

I think it turned out pretty good, although the noise effect is a bit disturbing for me, but you have a great sence of depht! What I think you could work more on is the little details, especially on the little buildings in front there.

You've come such a long way pawl! Keep on working hard :) +8

 08/23/06 @255

i personally though the light beam was a little cliche. I would like it better without it. Unless there is a significant point to it, to me it just sucks up too much attention from the rest of the composition.

Avatar mefisto

jes it could have more details (light-sources on the ground or in the sky..)
nevertheless its a great piece

Nice depth.

Impact/impression:

Pros:
Very nice work, the perspectives, shadows, sky and colours are all very nice indeed. I love the drab and muddy textures you have incorporated into this and the way the sky fades into different colours is excellent.
Cons:
The smaller buildings could have used some more details because at the moment they look like boxes. Perhaps some vehicles or people on the streets could have helped with the perspective of things. A more imaginative name would be cool too.
Overall opinion/feedback:
Great, this is a marked improvement over your other work and proof that hard work pays off, great job!
